Threefold House is a fully off-grid, high performance new build set across 100 acres on Tasmania’s East Coast. Designed and constructed without compromise, this bespoke home delivers an extraordinary standard of energy efficiency and indoor comfort – entirely disconnected from the grid – while holding its own as a work of considered design and fine craftsmanship. Every detail, from the building envelope to the interiors, was built with the same intent: nothing ordinary, nothing wasted.
Challenge
Building a high performance home is demanding. Building one off-grid, on a remote rural property in Tasmania, raises the bar considerably. The project required careful coordination of energy systems, water supply, and building fabric to ensure the home would function reliably and comfortably in complete independence from utility infrastructure. Achieving genuine airtightness – a prerequisite for the MVHR system to perform as designed – demanded precision at every trade interface, across a large and geometrically complex floorplan. Managing that level of envelope performance on a bespoke, irregular-plan build, far from metropolitan supply chains, was one of the defining challenges of the project.
Achievement
Perhaps the most striking interior feature is the Stringy Bark timber lining that runs throughout the home. Locally sourced from the client’s family farm, then milled and dressed specifically for the project, it brings a material honesty and warmth that no off-the-shelf product could replicate. The timber tells the story of the land the house sits on – sustainable, considered, and completely unique to this build. It’s the kind of detail that separates a high performance house from a high performance home.
